Tensions in Enugu after Police shooting of popular Ogene musician

Tensions have reached a boiling point in Enugu, the Coal City capital, after the tragic shooting of renowned Ogene musician Igbo Jah, also known as Okezie Chikezie Mba, by an officer from the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command.

The incident occurred late Friday night, prompting widespread outrage and protests among local youths, who have taken to the streets to voice their anger.

Reports indicate that Igbo Jah was shot while leaving a gathering at the Anti-Cult Unit’s headquarters. Eyewitnesses claim that during this event, a police officer fired his weapon for reasons that remain unclear, striking the musician.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe.

He disclosed that a male police inspector from the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad has been arrested and is currently in custody for the alleged murder of the musician. Ndukwe detailed that the shooting took place around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024.

“The musician was reportedly leaving the Squad’s Headquarters after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet to be ascertained, the police officer fired his rifle, hitting the victim,” Ndukwe stated.

He also confirmed that Igbo Jah’s body has been taken to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

In response to the incident, Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department to launch a comprehensive investigation.

This inquiry aims to ensure that the officer involved is held accountable and that appropriate disciplinary actions are taken.

Expressing his condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and the broader community, CP Uzuegbu condemned the incident as unacceptable and emphasized the need for justice.

He urged those connected to Igbo Jah to remain calm and work with law enforcement to ensure a fair resolution.

As protests continue, with youths igniting bonfires in the Obiagu and Asata areas of the city, the situation remains tense. The community is seeking answers and justice in the wake of this tragic event, which has cast a shadow over Enugu.
