Troops launch manhunt after gunmen kill soldier, steal weapons in Plateau
Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have launched a manhunt for gunmen who killed a soldier and stole two weapons during an attack on a military checkpoint in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack occurred at about 8pm on Saturday, October 31, at Sopp checkpoint in Ungwan Boka, where troops were deployed to maintain security.
According to security sources, the attackers opened fire on the soldiers from different directions, triggering an exchange of gunfire before they fled into surrounding bushes.
One soldier was killed during the incident, while the assailants reportedly escaped with two weapons.
Confirming the attack, the spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, described it as a deliberate and unprovoked assault on military personnel.
Oteh said troops had restored normalcy in the area and were pursuing the attackers to apprehend those responsible and recover the stolen weapons.
He added that security personnel had heightened surveillance to prevent further attacks and reassure residents of their safety.
“The situation remains under control, while troops continue to sustain heightened vigilance to prevent any further security breach and reassure residents of their safety,” he said.
The military spokesperson urged residents to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in tracking down the perpetrators.
Some residents condemned the attack and called on security agencies to ensure that those responsible were arrested, expressing concern over the safety of communities in the area.
The incident adds to security concerns in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State, which have experienced recurring attacks, kidnappings and clashes involving armed groups.
The military said operations would continue in the area as efforts to apprehend the attackers and recover the stolen weapons intensified.
