US congratulates Tinubu, urges calm in Nigeria
The United States on Thursday congratulated the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on his victory in the Saturday presidential election in Nigeria.
US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, on Thursday held a discussion on the election in Nigeria on the side-lines of the Group of 20 summit in New Delhi with the Nigerian Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama,
Ned Price of the State Department was cited to have in a congratulatory message on Wednesday, declared: “This competitive election represents a new period for Nigerian politics and democracy.
“We understand that many Nigerians and some of the parties have expressed frustration about the manner in which the process was conducted.
“Nigerians are clearly within their rights to have such concerns and should have high expectations for their electoral process.” Price enjoined party leaders to address their dissatisfaction through established legal “mechanisms.”
“We call on all parties to refrain from violence or inflammatory rhetoric at this critical time,” Price had said.
