Wrong-Way crane driver kills three in fatal Ogun expressway collision

Three people have been confirmed dead, while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a head-on collision along the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun State.

The accident occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday near Babcock Junction in Ikenne Local Government Area, involving a white Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number LG 59 BLF and a yellow crane without a registration number.

According to the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), preliminary findings showed that the crane was travelling against traffic at high speed when it collided with the oncoming truck. The crash involved six occupants three men and three women. Two men and one woman died, while the three surviving male victims were rushed to Babcock University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi said operatives of TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Police, and the “Papa Oscar” rescue team responded swiftly to the scene.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue in Sagamu, while traffic was diverted to ease congestion as authorities worked to clear the wreckage.

Akinbiyi urged motorists to avoid driving against traffic and other road violations, warning that such dangerous practices often lead to avoidable tragedies.
