2027: APGA Governorship aspirant rejects one-party state, urges Imo residents to defend democracy

An All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship aspirant for the 2027 Imo State governorship election, Mazi Okechukwu C. Okechukwu, has condemned recent remarks attributed to Governor Hope Uzodimma suggesting the desirability of a one-party system, insisting that democracy can only thrive in an atmosphere of political plurality and healthy competition.

In a statement, Okechukwu argued that Imo State belongs to all its citizens regardless of political affiliation and warned against any attempt to suppress opposition voices or undermine the democratic rights of the people.

He stressed that the strength of democracy lies in the existence of multiple political parties, freedom of association, accountability, and the electorate’s ability to freely choose their leaders.

According to the APGA aspirant, no individual or political party should seek to dominate the political space at the expense of democratic values.

“Imo State cannot and should not be reduced to a one-party state. Democracy is built on participation, diversity of opinions, and the people’s right to freely choose their leaders. Together, we must protect and strengthen our democratic institutions for the benefit of present and future generations,” he said.

Okechukwu called on residents of the state to remain committed to defending democratic principles by promoting political inclusiveness, unity, and good governance.

He reaffirmed APGA’s commitment to providing credible leadership and ensuring that the interests and voices of Imo people remain central to governance.

The governorship hopeful also expressed concern over what he described as recent incidents involving opposition political parties in the state.

He referenced the controversy involving an aide to the Imo State governor and members of the opposition, as well as the alleged vandalisation of a billboard belonging to the Action People’s Party (APP) at the party’s state secretariat.

According to him, acts of political intimidation, destruction of property, and violations of citizens’ rights are inconsistent with democratic principles and should not be tolerated.

He urged security agencies and relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law and ensure that all political actors operate within the framework of the Constitution.

Okechukwu further appealed to residents to remain law-abiding while working collectively towards the growth and development of Imo State.

He also advised citizens to reject all forms of injustice and violations of fundamental human rights, warning that supporting acts of oppression could have lasting consequences for society.

As preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections, the APGA aspirant encouraged eligible residents to register for and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), urging them to actively participate in the democratic process by electing leaders of their choice
