Prince Harry reveals why he wants to reconcile with King Charles, Prince William
Prince Harry has expressed his desire to repair his strained relationships with his father, King Charles III, and elder brother, Prince William, saying reconciliation is more important than prolonging family disputes.
The Duke of Sussex made the remarks in an interview with GQ magazine published on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in which he reflected on family relationships, grief and the possibility of moving beyond past disagreements.
“Some people don’t want it to work out – I want it to work out,” Harry said, adding that “the most important thing is to reconcile.”
He acknowledged that repairing the family rift would not necessarily erase the hurt caused by previous events.
“Scars stick around forever,” he said, while encouraging people to consider letting go of the past when strained relationships continue to affect their daily lives.
Harry also described family disagreements as a common experience, noting that people frequently ask him about his relationship with his father and brother because they can relate to similar difficulties in their own families.
His comments come after years of strained relations within the British royal family, following his and his wife, Meghan Markle’s, decision to step back from their roles as senior working royals in 2020 and relocate to the United States.
The couple’s subsequent interviews, Harry’s memoir Spare and public criticism of aspects of royal life further exposed tensions within the family.
Harry’s relationship with King Charles has shown signs of renewed contact, although the extent of their reconciliation remains unclear. His relationship with Prince William has remained particularly strained.
Following the publication of the interview, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex clarified that Harry’s remark that some people did not want reconciliation was not intended as a criticism of William or any other member of the royal family.
Harry also discussed his family’s recent return to the United Kingdom, saying that having his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, experience British schooling was important to him.
The prince said he hoped his reflections on family relationships could help others facing similar difficulties.
He added that he wanted to move beyond past disputes and focus on what could be achieved through reconciliation.
