Women Accountants inaugurate new executive c’tee

The Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN), Abuja Chapter on Sunday, in Abuja inaugurated its new executive committee, with Ms. Mbang Esu emerging as its 7th Chairperson.

The National Daily reports that, the 11-member committee is expected to lead the society for the next two years.

Speaking after her investiture, Esu promised to assist the government in fighting illicit financial flows and curbing corruption.

She added, ” the society would also be embarking on some projects, some of which include; Catch them young program, women empowerment, medical outreach and orphanages’ visitation, among others.”

Esu, who stressed the need for the girl-children in the country to brace themselves up for leadership positions, however, charged them to strive to impact themselves positively.

“For the girl-child, we are lending our voices too and we have a programme called women empowerment, it is all encompassing and we empower widows, single mothers and housewives.

” During my tenure, we are going further and advocating for husbands to also empower their wives in case of any eventuality, so that they can have something to fall back on.

“So, we are advocating for the girl-child to stand on her own, have her own voice, she should not walk on the shadow of anyone, build confidence, build trust and build integrity.

“So, my advice to the girl-children is that, they should not give up as they can achieve whatsoever they set out to achieve,” she said.

Dr Uchechukwu Ogah, Minister of State, Mines and Steel Development, urged the new executives to focus on training the youths and especially women to become accountants.

“Today, it is unfortunate that the men are failing us, but I want the women to rewrite the story of this country.

“The facts are there, let the women rise up to rewrite the history of this nation, because they have the capacity and the tenacity to uphold.

“I believe if we can bring women, integrate them more into the society, a lot will be achieved and we will have a better society for everyone,” he said.

On his part, Mr Ekpo Nta, Chairman, National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, also urged the female accountants to be committed to the common good of the country.

“I will like to at this point inform you that, most public and private sector financial frauds are perpetrated through a breach of our financial systems, particularly involving procurements of goods and services.

“And this results in misappropriation, embezzlement and other financial crimes.

“The role of the accountants cannot be ignored in any polity, because they play a critical role in the financial wellbeing of the organisations, citizens and countries,” he said.
