Getting intimate is a normal part of life- you are bound to do it at some point. However, you need to be equipped with the correct information to prepare and protect yourself.

Here are 6 things you need to know before getting intimate for the first time;

1.      It’s not compulsory to bleed or hurt

It’s a common misconception that your first time must hurt. This is false because intimacy is not meant to hurt. It might be uncomfortable at first and that can cause mild pain in the beginning.2.      Use protection

Using protection is not only about preventing pregnancy- it is very important for your health. Getting intimate without protection can cause transmission of STIs like gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, herpes and HIV/AIDS.

3.      Avoid eating spicy meals

The food you eat can affect the quality of intimacy. Some foods can cause odor in the private area. Spicy foods can cause bloating and severe farting. The last thing you want is to let out a big fart during intimacy.4.      Don’t shave

Shaving before intimacy will lead to a bad experience. When you shave you expose the top layer of the skin around your private area. This can lead to irritation, rash, and itching. If you proceed to get intimate, it can lead to transfer of infections such as HPV and herpes.

5.      You won’t look different

One common myth surrounding intimacy is that you’ll look different afterwards. The myth that someone will know when you’ve gotten intimate is only a lie that is told to caution young girls and boys and dissuade them from premarital intimacy. Your body undergoes some physical changes to prepare you for intimacy. After that, it returns back to its original state.6.      Avoid drinking alcohol

Drinking alcohol doesn’t make you feel in the mood, especially when you’ve had excess of it. Consuming alcohol before intimacy can result in an unenjoyable experience. Alcohol affects the parts of your nervous system which is responsible for the pleasurable experience you feel.
