FG seeks recovery of £200m stolen funds in US
The Nigerian Government is seeking the recovery of £200 million lodged in the United States.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday said that the government has embarked on massive recovering of stolen funds stashed in foreign banks.
The minister stated that the fight against corruption and illicit financial flow in the country is in progress. According to Malami, “We are looking at the possibility of recovering further £200 million among others but then, that does not mean they are not other associated assets being pursued, in terms of other countries of the world inclusive of Ireland.
“We are pursuing a lot of assets across the globe and then we intend to coordinate further meetings relating to recovery in the United Kingdom which is associated with certain personalities.”
Malami insisted that he would not disclose further details on the strategy the federal government will adopt to recover the stolen funds. He, however, indicated that the “government is trying to gather international momentum associated with the processes and procedures, in terms of making things easier for countries to recover assets with ease.”
