Presidency 2023: Peter Obi indicates interest to contest PDP presidential ticket
The Vice Presidential candidate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections, Peter Obi, has indicated interest to contest for the president in 2023, however, giving certain condition. The former Governor of Anambra State on Tuesday revealed that he will contest for the 2023 presidential election if the PDP zones the ticket to the south. he added that if it is thrown open, Nigerians will hear from him.
Obi on huis twitter handle wrote on Tuesday: “Yes, I will step into the field to contest for the opportunity to serve this great country as President if my party, the PDP, zones the ticket to the south.
“But if it is thrown open, Nigerians will also hear from me.”
Obi has sustained his close relationship with Atiku after the 2019 general elections even after they lost in the presidential race. He has been silent until Tuesday on the presidential race since his political ally, Atiku, had already declared interest in the presidential race and had commissioned a consultation committee led by High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, to mobiliser support across the country.
Peter Obi may have broken his silence as the controversies over zoning intensifies in the party and in anticipation of an agreement that could lead to the president being zoned to the south. invariably, the former governor would not want to be seen as being in the dark at this stage that aspirants are already declaring their interests in the presidential race.
There has been strong agitations and counter-agitations over zoning in the PDP. The party elders have also been deliberating and consulting on how to resolve the zoning and power rotation crisis and reposition the PDP for the 2023 general elections.
