Ekiti 2022: Why PDP might defeat APC despite the fact that both candidates are from Ekiti central
The two leading political parties in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), have chosen their candidates ahead of the Ekiti State Gubernatorial Election slated for June 18, 2022. Hon. Bisi Kolawole, a former Commissioner for Environment under Ex-Governor Ayodele Fayose’s administration, won the PDP ticket, while the APC chose the immediate past Secretary to the State Government (SSG) as its candidate.
Despite the outcry of Marginalization of the Indigenes of Ekiti South Senatorial District, which has yet to produce a governor since 1999, both Governorship Candidates came from the Ekiti Central Senatorial District. The PDP’s Kolawole is from Efon-alaaye, while the APC’s Oyebanji is from Ikogosi-ekiti.
On Wednesday, January 26th, 2022, the PDP held its Governorship Primaries using the Indirect Mode of Primary. It was reasonably quiet because all candidates were on a same footing, unlike the All Progressives Congress (APC), where seven out of eight governorship aspirants protested claimed imposition of candidate and requested a date change.
However, the Ekiti State APC Governorship Primaries Committee ignored their protests and proceeded with the election utilizing the Direct Mode of Primary. As a result, the All Progressives Congress’s (APC).
Thus, the Seven Aggrieved Aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) might work against the victory of the party in the forthcoming Governorship Election.
The ruling APC’s internal crisis in the state may have an impact on the party’s chances in the state. There are now two factions in the APC; one is loyal to the state’s incumbent governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, while the other is loyal to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
