4 warning signs that show a building wants to collapse
Due to the recent three-storey building collapse at Ebute-Metta area of Lagos, we ought to be enlightened about signs of a building collapsing.
When a building wants to collapse, it shows signs. These signs can begin to occur months before the building eventually collapses. However, not many people can predict when a building wants to collapse. In some cases, when they do, they don’t take it serious.
The Ebute-Metta building collapse in Lagos State has claimed the lives of many occupants, and some are still trapped inside.
To identify when a building wants to collapse, here are 4 things to look out for;
1. When the building begins to have a crack in the wall
This sign is quite obvious. A lot of aged buildings begin to have some cracks in the wall. This is a sign that the building needs renovation before it becomes worse and collapse.
When you notice cracks in the wall, don’t just mix cement and plaster it. Call a building contractor or Local Council Development Area (LCDA) to test and evaluate the structure of the house.
2. When the building begins to change position
Changing position refers to movement over some time. A building can tilt its position over time, and this is an indication that it wants to collapse. The foundation has proven weak and can’t sustain the load of the building.
3. When the building starts making a cracking and popping sound
Cracking and popping sound could be pillars breaking, pipes, grinds, and air dust rubbing against the wooden part of the structure etc. When you notice these sounds, be at alert to relocate from the building before it collapse.
4. When the building materials begins to deteriorate
When the building materials are fake or not up to the standard, the building begins to deteriorate. When these starts happening, you might notice some of the building materials are worn out and can no longer serve its purpose.
There are several other warning signs that show a building wants to collapse. It is safer to evacuate when you notice any of these signs than try to patch it up.
