Jose Mourinho clarifies why he’ll always be more Chelsea than Man Utd
Jose Mourinho has declared that he is a “Chelsea man,” preferring the club to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, both of whom he has coached.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, the Portuguese manager won three Premier League crowns and eight trophies in just over six years.
At Chelsea, Mourinho became a cult figure, but his subsequent actions strained his ties with the club and its supporters.
Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016, and in his first full season, he won the Community Shield, EFL Cup, and Europa League.
In his second season, he won the FA Cup and finished second in the Premier League before being fired in December 2018.
Before being sacked in April of last year, he coached Tottenham Hotspur for less than 18 months, collecting two sixth-place finishes and reaching the EFL Cup final. Mourinho went on to become the manager of the Italian club Roma.
Mourinho has taken the team to the Conference League final, but he has continued his pattern of disappointing league results — the side’s sixth-place finish in Serie A means that Mourinho has only finished the season or left a club in the top five in his seven years as manager.
Mourinho told BT Sport that his English connection is Chelsea: “Of course, my English connection is Chelsea, that’s the way I see things, as a Chelsea man after two periods of Chelsea and six years of Chelsea.”
Manchester United’s fans, on the other hand, are unique. I’m not glad to be right because there are so many excellent people in the club. I don’t want to be right; I’d rather be incorrect. I wanted to be incorrect, but I knew I was correct.
“When things aren’t going well, the first thing I look for is a change in thinking and organization, and that didn’t happen.” It was clear to me that leaving would not address the problem. Unfortunately, I was aware of this, but I wish them the best and hope they succeed.”
