ASUU: Educating the arrogant ignorant

According to reports, President Buhari’s regime released N6.25 billion to establish cattle ranches in Katsina state, the same day ASUU extended its strike.

People have been criticizing federal government for not settling ASUU’s need but are tackling other issues while Students and lecturers stay at home.

ASUU has come under serious castigation, criticisms, and all sorts of derogatory remarks by some concerned individuals and Nigerian federal university students for the extension of the ongoing industrial action indefinitely.

They accused the union of being inconsiderate, selfish and egoistic while undermining the ineptitude and lacklustre attitude of the federal government to resolve the grievances of the union before it resorted to utter closure of federal government-owned universities.

We could easily conclude that the reactions of those who are pillorying the actions of ASUU without considering their working conditions are borne out of sheer emotional outbursts, myopic and insensitive.

How long are we going to keep going in a circle in this country? Nigeria is a country that is exceedingly blessed with human and natural resources.

Our universities are understaffed and the lecturers are underpaid. How can a lecturer be assigned to teach four courses with over five thousand students? Sometimes they employ from their meagre salary to help them with the compilation of exam scripts.

The federal government says there is no money. What do they intend to do with the excess revenue from crude oil sales? Is the money not enough to revitalise our educational sector?

We have more than enough resources to run our system effectively but those in power have failed to do the needful.

We give them all the comforts they desire. Instead of paying us back by serving us with patriotism; they keep ruining the system.

Nigerians have transformed many of them from the shackles of poverty and ordinariness into influential and well-meaning individuals in society. This is the time for them to make a huge sacrifice for the betterment of this country by investing in the educational sector.

Grant the request of ASUU members and let them go back to class. They deserve wholesome and handsome salaries and good working conditions. An investment in human capital is the best form of investment.
