It’s time to admit certain harsh truths, take radical action to prevent another ASUU strike – Gbajabiamila
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, acknowledging the suspension of the national strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Friday after eight months, called for collective efforts to forestall re occurrence of such strike in the country. According to the speaker, ‘all hands must be on deck to ensure academic strikes in universities become a thing of the past.’
The Speaker commending the Federal Government and the leadership of ASUU for finding a way to end the strike, emphasized that it is time to “admit certain harsh truths and take radical action.” He lamented that the strike was allowed to last for eight months, adding that the strike should never have happened in the first place if appropriate responses were made.
Gbajabiamila, therefore, called on the government, universities, unions, and citizens “to begin the critical conversation about the future of public tertiary education in the country.”
The speaker declared: “Our public universities should be citadels of learning and innovation, where young people discover themselves and reach for the stars.”
