EFCC Chairman battles to avert court judgment sentencing him to prison, goes on appeal

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, in a battle to escape going to jail, appealed the court judgment sentencing him to prison at the Kuje Correctional Centre for contempt of court.

It was gathered that Justice Chizoba Oji of the Federal Capital Territory High Court convicted Bawa over the failure of the EFCC to comply with an order of the court.

Justice Oji on Tuesday held that the anti-graft chairman is in contempt of the order of the court made on November 21, 2018, directing the commission to return to an applicant, his Range Rover (super charge) and the sum of N40 million.

The judge further directed the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to ensure that the order of the court is executed forthwith.

Bawa, defending the agency’s budget at the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption, noted that they appeal has been filed on the judgment, saying  that the law would take its natural course.

According to the EFCC chairman, “Well, we have appealed against it, so we will allow the natural course of law to take its effect.”
