The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Friday claimed their superiority over the Black Stars of Ghana. The Finidi George tutored side edged their West African neighbours 2-1 in a friendly game at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.

The build-up to the game had set the tune of the encounter as more than a friendly match owing to the historic rivalry between the two countries.  The encounter marked the 60th meeting between the two African giants.

Despite being billed as a friendly, a fiery clash was expected. The encounters between the Super Eagles and the Black Stars have always be known for their intensity, regardless of the occasion.

Both teams had looked to turn the page after contrasting results at the last Africa Cup of Nations. Needless to say that the desire for a fresh start adds extra weight to the “Battle of Marrakech.”

Though some key players had sadly missed this edition of the “Jollof Derby,” both sides still had enough talent to execute the fierce encounter.

Nigeria was without attacking duo Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi, while Ghana had missed the inspiration of Premier League stars Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus.

National Daily recalls that the last friendly meeting between these teams ended in a goalless drawback in 2011.

Rangers attacker Cyriel Dessers had converted from the spot to hand the Super Eagles the needed lead in the first half.

İstanbul Başakşehir defender Jerome Opoku had made it hard for the Black Stars after receiving a red card in the 56th minute thus giving the Super Eagles a numerical advantage.

Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 84th minute before Crystal Palace winger Jordan Ayew reduced the deficit when he also converted from the penalty spot in extra time to end the game 2-1.
