NCC urges Nigerians to protect Hotspot passwords in latest cybersecurity campaign

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued an important advisory to mobile users, emphasizing the need to protect their hotspot passwords from unauthorized access.

In a lighthearted but crucial message, the NCC warned, “Your data seems to have vanished fast? Oh-oh… That’s why!”

 The statement, part of the commission’s ongoing cybersecurity awareness campaign, highlighted the risks associated with sharing hotspot passwords and urged users to “share love, not your hotspot password.”

The NCC’s reminder aims to raise public awareness about the growing threat of data breaches and unauthorized usage, particularly through unsecured hotspots. With mobile data consumption on the rise in Nigeria, many users are unknowingly exposing their personal data by leaving their hotspots vulnerable.

 “Protecting your hotspot password is crucial to preventing unauthorized access and data theft,” the NCC emphasized in its statement. By failing to secure their connections, mobile users risk not only losing their data but also exposing their personal information to potential cybercriminals.

In its advisory, the NCC provided key security tips to help Nigerians protect their mobile devices:

Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Avoid simple, easily guessed passwords such as “123456” or “password.” Instead, use a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols to create a secure password.

Avoid Sharing Login Credentials: While sharing your internet connection might seem convenient, it can lead to security vulnerabilities. Keep your login information private to prevent unauthorized access.

Regularly Update Passwords: Changing your password periodically reduces the chances of it being compromised.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Whenever possible, activate two-factor authentication for added security. This feature requires both a password and a secondary form of verification, such as a code sent to your mobile phone.

The NCC reaffirmed its dedication to protecting Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure, noting that educating the public on best practices for cybersecurity is a key part of its mandate.
