Just in: Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori dumps PDP

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move that is set to reshape the political landscape in the state.

The governor’s defection was confirmed on Wednesday following a closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Asaba, the state capital.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, in a brief statement, affirmed the development, saying that Governor Oborevwori had made the decision after wide consultations and strategic political considerations.

Although details of the closed-door meeting remain under wraps, sources within Government House disclosed that top APC leaders were present during the final deliberations, signalling the governor’s formal entry into the party.

Oborevwori, who was elected governor in 2023 under the PDP platform, has been a key figure in the political dynamics of Delta State. His switch to the APC is expected to strengthen the ruling party’s influence in the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers say the governor’s defection could trigger a wave of realignments within the Delta political establishment, as several of his loyalists and aides are expected to follow him to the APC in the coming days.

As of press time, an official statement from the national leadership of the APC welcoming the governor into its fold is still being awaited.

Governor Oborevwori is expected to formally address the people of Delta State and the media in the coming days on the reasons behind his defection and his vision going forward under the APC.
