Nigeria celebrates South Africa’s 31st Freedom Day, lauds Anti-Apartheid support
The Federal Government of Nigeria has warmly congratulated South Africa on its 31st anniversary of Freedom Day, recognizing the historic triumph over apartheid and recalling Nigeria’s unwavering support during the liberation struggle.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Republic of South Africa on the occasion of its 31st anniversary of Freedom Day, observed on April 27th.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, conveyed Nigeria’s goodwill in a statement released on Monday by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
Ambassador Tuggar specifically addressed his South African counterpart, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, extending warm felicitations on this “joyous occasion.”
He emphasized that Freedom Day marks the “historic triumph of democracy over apartheid” and serves as a celebration of the “enduring spirit of resilience and unity that defines the South African journey.”
The Minister highlighted the deep and enduring bond between Nigeria and South Africa, forged through decades of shared solidarity in the struggle against apartheid.
“As we reflect on this milestone, we recall Nigeria’s unwavering support for the anti-apartheid movement, including diplomatic, material, and moral contributions that underscored our commitment to justice and the ethos of pan-Africanism,” Ambassador Tuggar stated.

He further described Nigeria and South Africa as two of Africa’s largest economies and democracies, underscoring their shared responsibility in championing peace, security, and inclusive development across the African continent.
Looking towards the future, Ambassador Tuggar affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with South Africa across various sectors. These include trade and investment within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), as well as cultural exchanges and initiatives focused on youth empowerment.
“Therefore, we stand with South Africa in honoring the sacrifices of heroes like Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, Thabo Mbeki and recommit to working together to realize the vision of a prosperous, peaceful and united Africa,” the Minister concluded.
