The family of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has announced his passing.

According to a statement signed by Garba Shehu, a former presidential spokesperson, Buhari died on the afternoon of Saturday, July 13, 2025, at a clinic in London, United Kingdom.

A devout Muslim and retired Major General, Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 following a military coup, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, completing two terms in office.

Known for his anti-corruption stance and firm leadership style, Buhari played a defining role in shaping the country’s democratic and security architecture in the 21st century.

“May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” the brief statement read, reflecting the family’s faith and prayers for his eternal rest.

Details about funeral arrangements and official tributes are expected to be released by the Federal Government in the coming hours.

Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha, children, and grandchildren.
