Tinubu celebrates Wole Soyinka at 91, hails his enduring legacy in literature
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on the occasion of his 91st birthday, celebrating his enduring legacy as a literary giant, human rights advocate, and patriotic voice in Nigeria’s national life.
In a statement released on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu described Professor Soyinka as a global icon whose towering contributions to literature, democracy, education, cultural diplomacy, and nation-building continue to inspire generations across continents.
Soyinka, who made history in 1986 as the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, was praised by the President as a “massive source of inspiration” to both Nigerians and the global literary community.
“Professor Soyinka is an uncommon patriot who has continued to demonstrate his undying love for our country. Even at the grand old age, he remains a beacon of hope, knowledge, and moral courage,” Tinubu said.
The President also reflected on his personal association and decades-long collaboration with Professor Soyinka, highlighting their shared efforts toward advancing national development and democratic ideals in Nigeria.
“I value my association with Professor Soyinka and several collaborations to advance the progress and development of Nigeria,” Tinubu noted.
Marking what he described as the “beginning of the journey into the last decade of his centennial,” the President wished Soyinka continued good health and clarity of mind, celebrating his lifelong service to Nigeria and humanity.
Professor Wole Soyinka, widely regarded as one of the most important African literary figures of the 20th and 21st centuries, has played pivotal roles in literature, civil rights, and international cultural engagement.

Known for his fearless activism during military rule and his expansive body of dramatic, poetic, and prose works, Soyinka’s influence stretches far beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Literary critics and scholars around the world have often described his works as powerful commentaries on tyranny, social justice, and the human condition, while his personal commitment to truth and integrity has earned him both admiration and controversy in equal measure.
As Nigeria and the global community mark Professor Soyinka’s 91st birthday, tributes continue to pour in from writers, scholars, civil society leaders, and political figures—many of whom cite his courage, intellect, and eloquence as a moral compass in troubled times.
In his concluding message, President Tinubu encapsulated the national sentiment:
“We are grateful for his long years of service to Nigeria and humanity. On this special day, we honour a man whose voice has never wavered in the face of injustice. Happy birthday, Kongi.”
