Pep Guardiola reacts to Manchester City exit
Pep Guardiola has revealed that mental exhaustion and the need for “new energy” at Manchester City were major factors behind his decision to step down as manager at the end of the season.
The 55-year-old confirmed during a press conference on Friday that he will leave the Etihad Stadium after 10 years in charge, ending one of the most successful managerial eras in modern football.
Guardiola, whose final match will come against Aston Villa on Sunday, said the relentless demands of elite football management had taken a heavy toll after nearly two decades at the top level with Manchester City, FC Barcelona, and FC Bayern Munich.
“I feel I will not have the energy that is required every three days to compete and fight for titles,” Guardiola told reporters. “I need to breathe a little bit and relax.”
The Spaniard also suggested that Manchester City’s squad would benefit from a fresh voice and a new tactical direction after a difficult campaign in which the club lost the Premier League title race to Arsenal F.C..
“I think the club needs a new manager and new energy with these incredible players,” he added. “It is time for another chapter.”
Guardiola’s departure comes despite another trophy-winning season, with City securing domestic cup success even as they fell short in the league title race.
Since arriving at Manchester City in 2016, Guardiola has transformed the club into one of the dominant forces in European football, winning multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups, and the UEFA Champions League.
Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak confirmed that Guardiola will remain connected to the wider City Football Group in an ambassadorial role after leaving the managerial position.
The former Barcelona coach also revealed he intends to take a break from football management, saying he has no immediate plans to join another club after his departure.
Attention has now shifted to who will succeed Guardiola, with former City assistant and ex-Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca reportedly among the leading candidates linked with the role.
