Sowore confirms 2027 presidential bid as AAC schedules primary election

Human rights activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore has confirmed his intention to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election under the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC), as the party prepares to hold its national primary election next week.

Sowore, who previously contested the presidency in 2019 and 2023, said the AAC would continue to position itself as an alternative to both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the mainstream opposition parties ahead of the next general elections.

Speaking in Lagos, the activist stated that the AAC would focus on grassroots mobilization and youth engagement as preparations for the 2027 campaign intensify.

According to him, the party’s primary election will formally begin its transition into the new electoral cycle and help shape its strategy for the national contest.

Sowore also dismissed ongoing coalition talks among opposition figures and parties, insisting that the AAC would not participate in alliances driven solely by electoral convenience. In recent months, opposition politicians from parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have explored possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections.

“There is no need to pretend that the same political actors responsible for Nigeria’s long-standing challenges can suddenly become agents of change,” Sowore said while reiterating the AAC’s commitment to what he described as ideological politics and systemic reform.

The former presidential candidate maintained that the AAC would continue to campaign on issues including accountability, economic reform, social justice, and security.

Political analysts say Sowore’s early declaration signals the beginning of what is expected to be a competitive and crowded race toward the 2027 presidential election, with parties already positioning themselves amid growing public debate over governance, economic hardship, and insecurity.

The AAC is expected to unveil more details of its campaign structure and manifesto after the conclusion of its primary process next week.
