US panel accuses Nigerian security forces of collusion in militia attacks

A United States congressional panel has accused elements of Nigeria’s security forces, including the police and military, of alleged collusion in attacks carried out by armed militias in parts of the country.

The allegations were contained in discussions and findings referenced during a U.S. congressional hearing focused on insecurity, religious violence, and human rights concerns in Nigeria. Members of the panel reportedly raised concerns over claims that some security personnel either failed to respond adequately to attacks or were allegedly complicit in violence affecting vulnerable communities.

The accusations come amid longstanding concerns by international observers and civil society groups over recurring attacks linked to armed groups, banditry, and communal violence in several Nigerian states, particularly in the Middle Belt and northern regions.

However, Nigerian security authorities have consistently denied allegations of institutional collusion with militias or criminal groups. The Nigerian military and police have repeatedly maintained that they remain committed to combating insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats across the country.

Analysts note that allegations involving security agencies and militia violence have surfaced periodically in both domestic and international reports, often generating diplomatic and political debate over accountability, operational challenges, and human rights protections.

While the U.S. panel’s concerns have renewed international attention on Nigeria’s security situation, no official judicial finding has publicly established widespread institutional collaboration between Nigerian security agencies and armed militias.

The development is expected to fuel further discussions on security sector reform, civilian protection, and efforts to address violent attacks affecting communities across Nigeria.
