Police discover shallow grave as Anambraan confesses to girlfriend’s killing
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Ifechukwu Okechukwu in connection with the alleged killing of his 23-year-old girlfriend, whose remains were reportedly buried in a concealed grave.
Police said the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation initiated after the victim was declared missing by her family.
According to preliminary findings, the young woman was last seen after visiting the suspect at his residence. Her disappearance prompted concern after repeated attempts to reach her failed, leading her family to file a missing person report.
Investigators from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) reportedly picked up the suspect for questioning after inconsistencies were observed in his statements during initial interrogation.
Police sources say the suspect later confessed during further questioning, alleging that an altercation between him and the victim escalated, resulting in her death. He also allegedly admitted to burying her body in a shallow grave near his residence in an attempt to conceal the incident.
Following the confession, detectives and forensic teams recovered the remains, which have since been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest and recovery of the body, stating that investigations are ongoing.
A police spokesperson said the suspect is cooperating with investigators and that further forensic analysis will guide the direction of the case.
The command also reiterated its commitment to tackling violent crime and domestic-related killings, stressing that all suspects involved in such incidents would be prosecuted according to the law.
Authorities have cordoned off the area where the remains were discovered as forensic examinations continue. The suspect is expected to face charges relating to murder and unlawful disposal of a corpse once investigations are concluded.
