Manchester City have reportedly drawn up a three-man managerial shortlist as uncertainty deepens over Pep Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium, with former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso emerging as a leading candidate.

According to a report by The UK Telegraph, there is growing belief within football circles that Guardiola could step down as City manager at the end of the current season, despite having a contract that runs until 2027.

The Spaniard is understood to be considering a break from management, with sources suggesting he may walk away as early as May.

In anticipation of a possible departure, City’s hierarchy are said to be acting proactively by identifying potential successors, keen to ensure continuity in the club’s football philosophy and long-term project.

Alonso, who has earned widespread acclaim for his tactical intelligence and progressive coaching style, is believed to be on City’s three-man shortlist.

The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder has rapidly built a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young managers following his impressive work in the Bundesliga.

Also on the shortlist is former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. The Italian, who previously worked under Guardiola at Manchester City as part of the coaching staff, is highly regarded at the Etihad.

Reports indicate that Maresca had informed Chelsea on two separate occasions that he was in talks with City, further fuelling speculation about his potential return to the club in a senior role.

Completing the shortlist is Como head coach Cesc Fàbregas. The former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder has impressed in his early managerial career, with his Serie A side currently sitting sixth on the table and pushing strongly for European qualification.

His tactical approach and deep understanding of Guardiola’s football philosophy are said to have caught City’s attention.

While Manchester City have made no official comment on Guardiola’s future or the reported shortlist, the developments suggest the club is preparing for all scenarios.

Guardiola’s potential exit would mark the end of a transformative era that has delivered unprecedented domestic success and continental glory.

As the season progresses, attention is expected to intensify around Guardiola’s plans, with City fans and the wider football world watching closely to see whether the club will soon usher in a new chapter on the touchline.
