Ecuador's Shock victory over Germany sparks nationwide Holiday

Ecuador will observe a national holiday after its national football team produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Germany 2-1 to secure a place in the tournament’s knockout stage.

President Daniel Noboa announced the public holiday shortly after Ecuador completed a dramatic comeback victory over the four-time world champions in their final Group E fixture at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Thursday.

The Ecuadorian leader made the announcement on his official X account, praising the players and coaching staff for overcoming criticism, adversity and a difficult start to the competition to deliver a memorable triumph for the nation.

“Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults and the difficult moments they went through, managed to recover and give this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow, a holiday!” Noboa wrote.

The declaration sparked nationwide celebrations as Ecuadorians marked one of the country’s greatest achievements on the world football stage.

Ecuador entered the decisive encounter with their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread after a disappointing start to the tournament. The South Americans had opened their campaign with a draw against Curaçao before suffering defeat to Ivory Coast, leaving them with no option but to beat Germany to remain in contention for a place in the Round of 32.

Their task appeared even more daunting when Germany struck first to take an early lead, putting Ecuador on the brink of elimination.

However, the Ecuadorians responded with remarkable determination, producing a spirited comeback by scoring twice to secure a famous 2-1 victory over the former world champions.

The final whistle triggered jubilant celebrations among Ecuadorian supporters inside the packed New York/New Jersey Stadium, while millions of fans back home celebrated the historic achievement.

Despite the defeat, Germany progressed to the knockout stage as winners of Group E, having accumulated enough points from their earlier matches to finish at the top of the standings.

Ivory Coast claimed second place in the group following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Curaçao, while Ecuador advanced as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

The qualification represents only the second time Ecuador has reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup. The country’s previous appearance in the Round of 16 came at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, making this latest achievement a significant milestone in Ecuadorian football history.

Thursday’s victory is widely regarded as one of Ecuador’s greatest World Cup performances, not only because it came against one of football’s traditional powerhouses but also because it rescued a campaign that had appeared destined for an early exit after the opening two group matches.

For President Noboa, the dramatic victory was worthy of a nationwide celebration, prompting the declaration of a public holiday in honour of the team’s achievement.

For Ecuador’s players, meanwhile, the memorable comeback served as a powerful reminder of football’s unpredictability, demonstrating how one inspired performance can transform an entire tournament and create a lasting place in the nation’s sporting history.
