Saraki serves FG notice of appeal against court rulling

Senate President Bukola Saraki has appealed against the Appeal Court December 12 judgment annulling his acquittal by the Code of Conduct Tribunal that tried him for false assets declaration and other related charges.

His lawyers confirmed this on Monday.

A unanimous judgment was delivered last year by Justice Tinuade Akomolafe-Wilson in favour of the federal government against the Senate President’s earlier acquittal by the Danladi Umar-led CCT that dismissed those 18 counts for lack of evidence.

At least three out of the 18 charges levelled against him were restored then.

Dissatisfied with the judgment of the appellate court, Saraki filed a notice of appeal before the Supreme Court seeking an order setting aside the Court of Appeal’s judgment.

The Senate president’s notice of appeal, through his counsel Kanu Agabi, was filed on December 27, 2017.

It was also learnt that the appellant had compiled the records of the Court of Appeal and had them transmitted to the Supreme Court for validation of his appeal.

A top member of Saraki’s legal team, Mr. Paul Usoro (SAN), on Monday, confirmed that they had filed the Senate President’s notice of appeal.

Usoro, however, said the team would file additional grounds of appeal before the end of the week.

The notice of appeal has been served on the Federal Government’s legal team.

Saraki is coming to the Supreme Court for interpretation the second time in about three years on the CCT case which began in 2015.
