Former finance minister appointed Commonwealth’s adviser
Ngeria’s former finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed a member of the High Level Group on Governance of the Commonwealth Secretariat, a body that will be making recommendations on the secretariat activities.
At their last Summit in Malta, Commonwealth heads of government directed the Secretary-General Patricia Scotland QC to form the Group.
“Today members are discussing the scope of the group’s work and the areas of governance it will examine over the coming months. The process is open and the High Level Group reports to the heads,” a press statement issued from the secretariat read in part.
But certainly the group will not be deliberating on succession of Commonwealth heads.
The group, chaired by Anote Tong, a former president of Kiribati from 2003 to 2016, comprises seven members who are mostly former heads of government, ministers, secretaries, and ex-UN higher-ups.
Okonjo-Iweala was appointed as an independent non-executive director at Standard Chartered Plc in the United Kingdom last year.
Nigeria and other 52 Britain’s former colonies are members of the Commonwealth whose secretariat is in Malta.
