Alonso urges Chelsea to learn from Arsenal defeat as defensive concerns grow

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has urged his players to learn from their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, insisting the setback will be part of the learning process for his young squad.

The Blues suffered their first defeat under Alonso on Sunday after surrendering an early lead in an intense London derby at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea made a stunning start when Morgan Rogers fired them ahead just 77 seconds into the match. Arsenal, however, quickly recovered, with Kai Havertz restoring parity before Martin Ødegaard completed the comeback after the break.

The result ended Alonso’s perfect start since taking over at Chelsea in the summer. The Spaniard had previously guided the club to Premier League victories over Fulham and Brighton, as well as a League Cup win against Luton.

Despite the disappointment, Alonso said the match provided valuable lessons as his players continue to adapt to his tactical approach.

“I learnt about the game, about us, about what we are doing and what we are starting,” Alonso said.

“This is a process. It’s still early days for us. We want to start having clean sheets. They will come.”

The former Bayer Leverkusen boss acknowledged that Chelsea struggled to maintain control after taking the lead, allowing Arsenal to dictate important periods of the contest.

“After we scored, there were 15 or 20 minutes where we had to defend too much and we were struggling a bit to get control,” he said.

“Overall, it was a very tight, very intense game. We could do better with the second goal. You need to control the overloads on the right side.”

Chelsea’s defensive vulnerability has emerged as an early concern under Alonso, with the team conceding seven goals across their opening three Premier League matches.

The manager, however, remained optimistic about his team’s long-term prospects and urged supporters and players to remain patient.

“It hurts because a defeat has to hurt. It was a very intense game. We had chances to equalise,” he said.

“It’s game three and this is going to be a long, long ride.”

Alonso also praised his players for their commitment to implementing his ideas as Chelsea seek to develop into genuine title contenders.

“The players are committed to working hard, to knowing that we’re on the way to compete in each game,” he added.

Arteta Hails Arsenal Response

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised his players for their reaction after conceding so early.

The Gunners’ comeback secured a significant victory over their London rivals and demonstrated their ability to remain composed after falling behind.

“It wasn’t the right start but we certainly reacted in an amazing way,” Arteta said.

“I enjoyed the way we competed. We took risks. It was a joy to watch.”

The victory will further boost Arsenal’s confidence, while Chelsea are left to address their defensive weaknesses as Alonso continues to shape the team in his first season in charge.
