Arewa Youths warn ECOWAS against military action in Niger
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum has renewed its strong opposition to military action in Niger Republic in the aftermath of the coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
The AYCF, accordingly, cautioned President Bola Tinubu, Chairman of the Economic Community of West Africa( ECOWAS), as well as the West African sub-regional body, itself, and the African Union (AU) to desist from the use of military force to confront the military regime in Niger Republic and compel the coup leaders to surrender power to ousted President Mohamed Basoum, on the expiration of the ECOWAS 7 days ultimatum.
The President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Yerima Shettima, speaking on Channels Television, was of the view that Nigeria, particularly, the northern region, will pay devastating costs if ECOWAS uses military force to confront the military regime in Niger Republic to restore the ousted President.
Yerima, like several other stakeholders in Nigeria, counseled President Tinubu not to lead ECOWAS into war in Niger, but use diplomacy and dialogue to engage the military regime in Niger.
The AYCF President, however, urged the military regime in Niger to immediately commence the process of transition to restore democracy in the country governance within one year. He declared that military rule is no longer fashionable in Africa.
