China challenges US over sponsoring Taiwan for UN membership
China on Wednesday challenged the United States of America (US) over pushing for Taiwan to become a member of the United Nations Organisation (UN). China unequivocally declared that Taiwan had no right to join the United Nations (UN), as the US made a case for Taiwan to have greater involvement in the global multi diplomatic platform.
US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, in a statement marking the 50 years of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, regretted that Taiwan has been increasingly excluded from the UN activities since the UN General Assembly voted to admit Beijing and boot out Taipei.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, had declared: “As the international community faces an unprecedented number of complex and global issues, it is critical for all stakeholders to help address these problems. This includes the 24 million people who live in Taiwan,”.
Blinken argued: “Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system is not a political issue, but a pragmatic one.
“That is why we encourage all UN member states to join us in supporting Taiwan’s robust, meaningful participation throughout the UN system and in the international community.”
The spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office in Beijing, Ma Xiaoguang, had blasted Blinken over his statement, insisting that Taiwan had no place on the global diplomatic platform.
China maintained the perception that Taiwan is merely an island where nationalist forces fled in 1949 after losing a civil war to the communists. China insisted that Taiwan is a province awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.
China has, apparently, not considered Taiwan as a sovereign state with an independent government, but as a part of China.
According to Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office in Beijing: “Taiwan has no right to join the United Nations.
“The United Nations is an international governmental organisation composed of sovereign states… Taiwan is a part of China.”
The United States has been providing military support for Taiwan to resist the plans by China to annex the democratic island which has been contending ownership of the South Sea with China. The US has also been lobbying for the admission of Taiwan into the UN.
