Court remands Gani Topba in DSS custody over defamation, cyberstalking charges
The Federal High Court has ordered that Gani Topba be remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) pending the continuation of proceedings over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking.
The court directed that Topba remain in DSS custody until August 28, 2026, when the matter is expected to come up for further hearing.
The allegations against Topba reportedly involve offences under the Cybercrimes Act and other relevant laws. The case centres on claims relating to defamatory publications and alleged cyberstalking activities.
During proceedings, the court considered the circumstances surrounding the allegations and directed that Topba remain in custody while the legal process continues.
The remand order means Topba will remain in DSS custody until the next scheduled court date, unless the court makes a further order before then.
The prosecution is expected to continue presenting its case and addressing the allegations against the defendant, while the defence will have an opportunity to respond to the charges and pursue any available legal remedies.
The development adds to growing legal scrutiny of alleged online offences in Nigeria, particularly as authorities continue to rely on provisions of the Cybercrimes Act in cases involving allegedly defamatory or harassing digital communications.
The Cybercrimes Act provides a legal framework for addressing various forms of cyber-related offences, although allegations must still be established through due judicial process.
Topba’s remand does not amount to a conviction, and the allegations remain subject to determination by the court.
The case has been adjourned to August 28, 2026, when proceedings are expected to resume. Both the prosecution and defence are expected to appear before the court as the matter progresses.
