Ending corruption can restore Africa’s Image- Prof Udeze
A leading Nigerian academic has urged African leaders to prioritize the eradication of corruption to improve the continent’s global image and perception. Prof. Sunny Udeze emphasized that addressing corruption is essential for building a positive reputation and attracting foreign investment.
A Professor of Mass Communication at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof. Sunny Udeze, has called on African leaders to dismantle the negative image of Africa by addressing entrenched corruption practices.
In his inaugural lecture titled “Deconstruction Stereotypes and Reconstructing the Image of Africa in the Global Media: Public Relations Nexus,“ Prof. Udeze emphasized that positive public relations can only be achieved through truthfulness and positive actions.
He criticized the outrageous corrupt practices of African leaders that have contributed to negative perceptions of the continent, including stereotypes that portray Africans as living in caves or having tails like monkeys.
Prof. Udeze stressed that overcoming these misconceptions requires a commitment to truth and good governance.
He noted that the high level of corruption in official circles has significantly damaged Africa’s image.
The professor argued that public relations cannot be effective without genuine positive actions.

He criticized the focus on sensational news and the portrayal of negative aspects of African life by foreign media.
He emphasized that building a positive image requires governments to prioritize image management and focus on constructive actions.
Prof. Udeze called on African leaders to prioritize the well-being of their citizens and address issues such as poverty, inadequate healthcare, and corruption.
He highlighted the need for responsible leadership and a focus on building a positive image for Africa on the global stage.
