Ewuare II urges action against land-grabbers
It’s incontrovertible that activities of land – grabbers in different parts of the Benin Kingdom have reached an alarming point. Their trademarks and modus operandi include wrongful entry , multiple deals , Illegal possession of people ‘s land and mindless encroachment , to mention but a few.
In many cultures across the country, land grabbing is an affront on the customs and traditions of the people. In the Benin Kingdom, for instance, the infraction is profane and sacrilegious and therefore a crime against the age-old Pantheon of the Royal Palace.
For obvious reasons, land grabbers do not mean well for the socio-economic advancement of the people. This is why the revered Benin monarch, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare 11 is usually inflamed with displeasure anytime land grabbing matters are brought before him.
Nearly always, people involved in land grabbing activities carry out their nefarious deeds with blatant impunity, much to the chagrin of well-meaning citizens of society.
Omo N’Oba ‘s remarks at a recent courtesy call by the new Commander of 4 Brigade , Nigerian Army – Brig. General Danlami Ndahi , portrayed his feelings towards the unwholesome activities of the miscreants.
“Our ancestors forbid their activities. They have destroyed the moral fibre and cultural ethos of the society,” he said.
“Somebody will sell land to multiple buyers and they are at each other’s throats. They drag each other’s land, killing themselves. No respect for the traditional institution. No respect for the elders.”
Oba Ewuare II has thus called for action against it.
And there is no going back.
