France confirms U-20 Women’s World Cup participation amid FIFA-UEFA rift

The French Football Federation (FFF) has confirmed that France will participate in the upcoming FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, becoming one of the first major European football nations to publicly declare its position amid an escalating dispute between FIFA and UEFA.

The FFF told BBC Sport that the French women’s Under-20 team remains scheduled to travel to Poland for the tournament, which is due to begin on September 5.

“For now, France will be participating to the Fifa U20 Women World Cup,” the federation said in a brief statement.

France’s decision comes against the backdrop of growing tensions between European football’s governing body, UEFA, and world football’s governing body, FIFA.

Dispute threatens FIFA competitions

The disagreement centres on proposals associated with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and plans involving private investment in commercial aspects of FIFA competitions.

The proposals have reportedly generated strong opposition among UEFA’s 55 member associations, with European football authorities threatening collective action, including a possible boycott of FIFA-sanctioned competitions.

Although FIFA leadership has sought to ease the dispute, UEFA has not completely abandoned the possibility of a boycott.
