A heavy security presence was observed at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday as political tensions escalated following the controversial impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Armed operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos State Task Force were stationed at the main entrance of the complex, ensuring strict security measures.

In a dramatic turn of events, DSS officers reportedly locked the offices of newly appointed Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk, raising questions about the unfolding power struggle within the state legislature.

The security clampdown comes just days after Obasa was removed from office while on an official trip to the United States. His impeachment, supported by 32 out of 40 lawmakers on January 13, has sparked controversy, with political analysts questioning the legitimacy and process of his removal.

In response to his ousting, Obasa has filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court, challenging the legality of his impeachment.

His legal team is pushing for an urgent hearing, arguing that due process was not followed and that the lawmakers who orchestrated his removal may have violated constitutional procedures.

Speaking on the matter, constitutional lawyer and political analyst, Barrister Dele Fashola, stated: “The impeachment of Speaker Obasa raises serious constitutional concerns. While lawmakers have the right to remove a sitting speaker, the procedures must be transparent, fair, and follow legal precedence. If due process was not adhered to, the court may have to intervene to rectify any violations.”

Similarly, Dr. Ngozi Adebayo, a political science professor at the University of Lagos, expressed concerns over the increasing militarization of the state legislature.

“A heavy security presence in a democratic institution like the House of Assembly sends the wrong signal. It creates fear and uncertainty, especially among lawmakers and staff who need a safe environment to carry out legislative duties. This situation must be handled with caution to avoid further escalation,” she said.

As tensions mount, sources within the Assembly hint that factions loyal to Obasa may be exploring alternative strategies to reclaim his position.

Meanwhile, Speaker Meranda has yet to make an official statement on the security situation, but close aides suggest she is working behind the scenes to ensure stability within the House.

With the legal battle set to unfold in the coming days, all eyes are on the Lagos State High Court to determine the fate of the embattled former speaker. Until then, the state’s legislative activities remain in a state of uncertainty.
