Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA), on Wednesday, condemned Tuesday attack by gunmen on United States Embassy staff convoy in the Amiyi/Eke Ochuche communities of Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State where four persons were killed by the assailants.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, tasked security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.

The United States Embassy staff were on a humanitarian mission in the state before they were ruthlessly shot dead in an ambush by dastard gunmen overrunning the South-East geopolitical zone for years now.

HURIWA said although no US citizen was killed, those killed are nationalities of other nations or even Nigeria including the policemen and so the USA should think of imposing travel ban on the governors of the South East of Nigeria to compel them to act swiftly to end the mindless orgies of dastardly attacks and bloodshed in Igboland.

Local sources in the area recount how the assailants brazenly ambushed the victims, opening fire without hesitation. Panic engulfed the community as the attackers disrupted a gathering of residents eagerly awaiting medical assistance from UNICEF officials.

Both the police and US authorities have said that no American was hurt or killed in the ambush, making inference that the persons killed are Nigerians working for the Consulate.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “This is condemnable and our security agencies must do all possible to bring the perpetrators to book.”
