Kogi legislature boils, members impeach Speaker, others
The Kogi State House of Assembly has been thrown into turmoil over leadership tussle since the impeachment of the Speaker, Rt, Hon. Matthew Kolawole, by 19 house members. The 19 members accused Kolawole of financial impropriety, high-handedness, serial abuse of office, and refusal to abide by provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended); therefore, declaring him no longer fit to occupy the office of the Speaker of the state assembly.
The lawmakers proceeded to move a motion for the impeachment of the Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Mohammed, and three others principal officers, including the Majority Leader, Abdullahi Balogun, earlier removed from office before the impeachment of the speaker, Matthew Kolawole.
The Kogi State House of Assembly was without active legislative activities for several months until Friday, June 17 when the doors of the chambers were opened under tight security presence.
The lawmakers were said to have arrived House of Assembly in an air-conditioned bus for the impeachment of the speaker and others.
