The Lagos State Government has pledged to implement stronger safety measures for the transportation of hazardous materials, including gas and petroleum products, following the gas tanker explosion on Otedola Bridge on Tuesday.

Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation, made the statement in Lagos on Wednesday, expressing deep regret over the explosion, which caused significant damage and disruption to activities in the area.

“We deeply regret the gas tanker explosion on Otedola Bridge, which caused widespread damage and disruption of activities.

Our thoughts are with those affected, and we commend the swift response of emergency services working tirelessly to manage the explosion aftermath,” Osiyemi said.

He emphasized that the incident highlighted the urgent need for stricter safety protocols concerning heavy-duty vehicles.

Osiyemi stated that the Ministry of Transportation was intensifying efforts to enforce regulations on the movement of hazardous materials, strengthen compliance, and introduce enhanced safety measures to prevent future accidents.

“We call on all transport operators to uphold the highest safety standards and cooperate with government efforts to safeguard lives and property,” he added.

Osiyemi reaffirmed that Lagos State remains committed to ensuring a safer and more resilient transport system for all its residents.
