Man City sign Argentina goalkeeper Rulli from Marseille

Manchester City have signed Argentina international goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille on a two-year contract, with both clubs confirming the move on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old is expected to serve as City’s second-choice goalkeeper behind Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The transfer marks Rulli’s return to Manchester City, having previously spent the 2016/17 season at the club without making a first-team appearance.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me and one I had to grasp,” Rulli said.

“When the chance to join Manchester City comes along, you have to go for it.

“Everyone knows what an impressive club this is. City’s success over a long time has been impressive. Everyone I have spoken to about City said I had to join them because they are a club with incredibly high standards.

“My job now is to train hard, get to know the players and staff and do everything I can to reach my best level.”

Rulli has earned eight caps for Argentina and was part of the squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Copa America. He was also in Argentina’s squad for last month’s World Cup final, where they lost 1-0 to Spain.

The goalkeeper has previously played for Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Montpellier and Ajax.

Rulli was also involved in one of the most memorable moments of the 2021 Europa League final between Villarreal and Manchester United. He scored from the penalty spot before saving David de Gea’s effort as Villarreal won the shootout 11-10.

His departure comes as Marseille look to raise funds after being fined €10 million for failing to meet UEFA’s financial break-even requirements.

Marseille’s fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 during the 2025/26 season also means they will miss out on Champions League football.

The French club have already sanctioned several departures this summer. On Tuesday, Marseille confirmed the transfer of Argentine defender Facundo Medina to Bayer Leverkusen after just one season at the club.

English forward Mason Greenwood has also left for Fenerbahce, while Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined Spanish club Deportivo La Coruña.

Rulli’s move to Manchester City adds further experience to Pep Guardiola’s squad as the club prepare for another demanding campaign.
