Minister Laments Economic, Human Losses from Ongoing Protests
The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has expressed concern over the significant economic losses caused by the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests across the country.
Speaking at the African Caucus 2024 meeting in Abuja on Sunday, Bagudu emphasized that the loss of human life resulting from the protests far outweighs any material damage incurred.
“The loss of even a single life cannot be quantified,” Bagudu stated, highlighting the tragic human toll of the protests. He also cautioned that even well-intentioned actions can be exploited by those with malicious intentions, leading to further harm and social disruption.

The minister acknowledged that the government’s economic transformation measures, though necessary to address decades of under-investment in critical sectors, may carry short-term costs.
He noted that while some may disagree with the government’s approach, the administration remains committed to addressing longstanding issues in security, infrastructure, human capital, education, and health.
“We understand that some segments of society feel we could have taken a different approach or that the process has been too slow, and we are listening. We are mindful,” Bagudu added, reaffirming the government’s resolve to pursue a path of economic reform despite the challenges.
