NSA warns against disruption of Edo, Ondo governorship elections

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has issued a stern warning against any attempts to undermine or disrupt the forthcoming Edo and Ondo governorship elections.

Represented by a Director from the Office of the NSA during an Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) meeting organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, Ribadu emphasized that such actions would be considered an assault on Nigeria’s democracy.

Ribadu highlighted incidents of violence linked to inter- and intra-party conflicts in the two states and stressed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to ensuring peaceful elections.

“Those planning to disrupt the elections should not mistake the current administration’s commitment to peace for weakness,” he stated.

He assured voters that law enforcement agencies are on high alert to protect the integrity of the elections and will respond decisively to any threats.

The NSA also encouraged voters to participate confidently in the elections and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. He emphasized the importance of the role of security forces and election officials in safeguarding the democratic process.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, also addressed the meeting, urging security agencies to remain vigilant and maintain peace in Edo and Ondo.

He called on political parties and their supporters to ensure a peaceful electoral process, particularly during the campaign period.

Yakubu emphasized the need for security personnel to adhere strictly to their code of conduct during electoral duties.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, represented by the Commissioner of Police in charge of Elections, Lanre Ogunlowo, assured that the police, in coordination with other security agencies, are fully prepared to ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections.

He stated that measures are being implemented to prevent any interference by non-state actors and to guarantee that voters can cast their ballots safely and securely.
