How Self-Proclaimed ‘Obi of Lagos’ Orchestrated ₦1.5bn Fraud Scheme — Police
The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered a shocking case of high-level deception involving a 65-year-old man, Engr. Chibuike Azubike, who falsely styled himself as the “Obi of Lagos” in an alleged ₦1.5 billion scam aimed at defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians.
Azubike, arrested alongside three accomplices, had planned to host an elaborate installation and palace unveiling ceremony at Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin on Saturday, September 13, 2025. Police say the event was nothing more than a smokescreen to lure dignitaries and members of the public into donating towards a fictitious royal project.

Self-Proclaimed ‘Obi of Lagos’ and his team
“The suspect confessed he is not a certified engineer, but merely a supplier of construction materials,” said DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Azubike announced the unveiling of a ₦1.5 billion “Palace of the Obi of Lagos State” a title with no recognition under the traditional rulership structure in Lagos. The police have confirmed that the self-acclaimed title was fabricated, with no backing from any legitimate traditional council.
“This individual acted alone, without endorsement or recognition from any known royal institution in Lagos,” Oluseyi clarified. “The entire event was a ploy to fleece prominent figures and well-meaning citizens.”
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, assured the public that justice will be served, adding that the suspects will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
“We urge residents to remain alert and report similar suspicious activities. The command is committed to protecting the public from deception and maintaining peace and order,” CP Jimoh said.
Authorities are warning Lagosians to disregard Azubike’s misleading social media posts and avoid falling victim to similar scams dressed as cultural or royal celebrations.
