How I was abducted, robbed in Romania – Wole Soyinka
Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has revealed that he was once abducted and robbed during a trip to Romania.
Speaking in a recent interview, the renowned playwright and essayist recounted how the incident unfolded, describing it as one of the most terrifying experiences of his life.
According to Soyinka, he had traveled to the Eastern European country for an engagement when he was lured into a vehicle by individuals who posed as officials. The supposed officials, however, turned out to be criminals.
“I was bundled into a car under the pretext of being taken to my hotel. Instead, I found myself driven around for hours, stripped of my belongings and threatened. It was a shocking experience,” he said.
Though Soyinka eventually regained his freedom without physical harm, the robbers made away with cash, personal items, and travel documents.
The 90-year-old literary icon reflected on the ordeal with a mix of humor and resilience, noting that it deepened his understanding of insecurity as a global menace, not just a Nigerian or African problem.
“This happened in Europe, far away from Nigeria where we are used to hearing such stories. It was a reminder that criminality knows no borders,” Soyinka remarked.
Soyinka, who remains an outspoken voice on issues of governance, justice, and human rights, urged governments worldwide to invest more in citizen safety and cross-border security.
