In preparation for the 2022 governorship election in Ekiti State, aspirants from the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are already preparing for the struggle that will determine the party’s candidate.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scheduled the Ekiti governorship election for June 18, and July 16, 2022, seven months before Dr Kayode Fayemi’s second term will end.

To that purpose, the PDP conducted a screening procedure for seventeen candidates at the NWC hall of the party national secretariat in Abuja a few days ago. However, because of their political prowess, three of these hopefuls should be kept on the lookout.

Here are three candidates they can present if they want to win the election.

Biodun Olujimi

Senator Biodun Olujimi, who represents Ekiti South in the National Assembly, is the first of them.

Olujimi’s experience as a two-term senator, former member of the House of Representatives, and former deputy governor is thought to give him an advantage over other candidates.

Furthermore, the clamor that the state’s next governor must be from the south is in favor of the politician, as she comes from that region.

Those who protested stated that, in the sake of equality and fairness, the South Senatorial District should be given the opportunity to represent the state in the next governorship election, despite the fact that it had not held the seat since the state was formed 25 years ago.

Similarly, the Southern Senatorial District is noted for having the most LGAs, although it has yet to produce an elected Governor of the state.

Segun Oni

In addition, a former Ekiti State Governor, Chief Segun Oni, is another strong contender in the Ekiti 2022 gubernatorial election.

The former governor, who served from May 29, 2007, to October 14, 2010, stated that his ambition to return to office is based on the desire of the people of Ekiti to see him return in order to continue his enduring legacies. Oni hails from Ifaki in Ekiti’s North Senatorial District.

Chief Bisi Kolawole

Former state chairman Chief Bisi Kolawole, who is also regarded as former governor Ayo Fayose’s chosen candidate, is another key contender on the party’s platform.

Kolawole, a native of Efon Alaaye in the Ekiti Central Senatorial District, served in the House of Assembly from 2007 to 2011 and as Commissioner for Environment under Fayose’s administration from 2014 to 2018.

He’s known to be riding high on the support of his political ‘godfather,’ and hence cannot be ignored in the governorship contest. Kolawole, according to the former Ekiti governor, is a bridge builder who will usher in a better future for Ekiti and the party.

Finally, with just about seven months till the governorship election in Ekiti state, it is hoped that the best candidate will emerge as the PDP’s candidate.
