Tinubu introduces reforms to reduce cost of governance, stops FG funding of professional bodies, councils

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has introduces seeing reforms to cut the cost of governance in Nigeria. The President, accordingly, put an end to government’s funding of some professional agencies and councils operating under certain ministries.

The Budget Office of the Federation in a memo to the councils, by the Director General, Ben Akabueze, dated June 26, 2023, indicated that the federal government has resolved to discontinue budgetary allocations to professional bodies and councils. This, the Budget Office said, was in compliance with the resolution of the Presidential Committee On Salaries (PCS).

The Director General, in the memo, declared: “I wish to inform you that, the Presidential Committee on Salaries, (PCS) at its 13th meeting approved the discontinuation of budgetary allocation to Professional Bodies/Councils effective 31st December, 2026.

“The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to inform you that, in compliance with PCS’s directive, this Office will no longer make budgetary provisions to your Institution with effect from the above stated date and, you will be regarded as a self-funded organisation.

“For the avoidance of doubt, you will be required, effective 31st December, 2026 to be fully responsible for your personnel, overhead and capital expenditures.”
The memo identified the affected councils and the terms of withdrawal of budgetary funding as follows:

A. Those whose funding would be stopped by December 2024.

Meanwhile, it is not certain if President Tinubu would extend the reforms to other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) where there are duplication of structures and functions in the Nigerian public service system.
