Prof. Edoba Omoregie, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has called on more students of the institution to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Benin by the university’s Spokesperson, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, it was revealed that Omoregie made the appeal during a visit to the NELFUND office in Abuja.

The vice-chancellor expressed concern over the low enrollment figures of UNIBEN students in the scheme and urged them not to miss the opportunity for financial support.

“In furtherance of his student-centered goals, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin met with NELFUND officials to discuss the potential for increasing student enrollment in the scheme,” the statement read.

Omoregie lamented the current low enrollment figures and called for expanded opportunities for more students to benefit from the loan fund.

“I am deeply concerned about the abysmal enrollment numbers and urge more students to seize this opportunity.”

The statement also included comments from Mr. Mustapha Iyal, the Executive Director of Operations at NELFUND.

Iyal identified inadequate awareness and doubts about the authenticity of the scheme as key reasons behind the low enrollment rates.

He expressed the scheme’s readiness to include more UNIBEN students, provided they apply and meet the necessary guidelines.

“The NELFUND scheme is eager to include as many students as possible, as long as they follow the application process,” Iyal stated.

Iyal also took the opportunity to congratulate Prof. Omoregie on his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, describing it as well-deserved.
