More and more people are today taking up self-employment.

For some, this might mean starting a business of their own; for others, it means freelancing for existing companies.

Vivian Carolina Sanchez works for herself as a lighting designer, and her company The Lighting Studio is booming. Here are her favorite merits of being self-employed.

You’re your own boss
Working under someone can be a negative experience, especially if you don’t get along with them. “I love being my own boss,” Vivian said. “I can control how my work is done, and focus on the things I love. I no longer have to work a 9-5 that I don’t like.”

You get to work a variety of jobs
Working for the same company can get boring after a while. If you’re self-employed, you can try out new things.

“I find that I enjoy the work I do much more. I am challenged more often, and I love being able to take ownership with what I do. When I do an amazing job, I’m furthering my skills, not just developing assets for my employer.”

You can set your own schedule
Not everyone enjoys waking up to go to work early. If you’re self-employed, you can make your own schedule. Some freelance workers do their tasks after their other jobs in the evening, while others might just spend a little extra time sleeping in the morning.

“I don’t feel rushed as a freelancer,” said Vivian. “I can set my own pace and take time off when I need to.”

You choose your own customers
When you’re working at a 9-5 job, you might have bosses, coworkers, and clients who drive you nuts. When you work for yourself, you choose your customers and the tasks you want to do. “If a client doesn’t treat you well or your vision doesn’t match, you can simply decide not to work with them anymore,” said Vivian. “That’s a huge relief.”

Being self-employed or an entrepreneur can change your life. If you’re able to strike out on this journey, people like Vivian Carolina Sanchez, who are familiar with its challenges, would recommend it highly.
